LIKE A STRANGER

“More than any other nation on Earth, America has constantly drawn strength and spirit from wave after wave of immigrants. In each generation, they have proved to be the most restless, the most adventurous, the most innovative, the most industrious of people. Bearing different memories, honoring different heritages, they have strengthened our economy, enriched our culture, renewed our promise of freedom and opportunity for all….”
President Bill Clinton

Many people come to America because they believe it is the "Land of the Free," a place where personal freedoms, economic opportunities, and the chance to build a better life are within reach. For countless individuals and families, America also represents something even deeper: a chance to worship God freely, without fear of persecution. The phrase "Living the American Dream" continues to inspire hope around the world, not just for material success but for the freedom to live according to one's faith.

Throughout history, America has been a beacon for those seeking religious liberty. Early settlers like the Pilgrims crossed the ocean not for wealth, but to freely worship God without government interference. Today, that legacy continues. For many immigrants, the opportunity to openly practice their faith—to gather in churches, mosques, synagogues, and temples without fear—is one of the greatest blessings they find in the United States.

The Bible reminds us of God’s heart for the foreigner:"The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the Lord your God."(Leviticus 19:34, NIV)

This call to compassion and welcome echoes through the story of immigration today.

According to the Migration Policy Institute, there were 47.8 million immigrants residing in the United States as of 2023, based on the latest American Community Survey (ACS) from the U.S. Census Bureau. Of them, nearly three-quarters were in the country legally—as naturalized citizens, legal permanent residents (green card holders), or holders of temporary visas. Out of the total immigrant population, around 3.7 million are refugees who have fled their home countries, often because their ability to worship God freely was under threat. https://www.migrationpolicy.org/article/frequently-requested-statistics-immigrants-and-immigration-united-states

Why Do People Immigrate to the United States?

  • Religious Freedom: One of the most powerful motivations is the ability to worship God according to one’s own conscience. In America, people can practice their faith openly, evangelize freely, and raise their families in a community of believers without fear of government reprisal.

  • Economic Opportunities: The United States has one of the largest and most dynamic economies in the world. Many immigrants come seeking higher wages, better job prospects, and the chance to provide a better life for their children—believing that God is opening new doors for them.

  • Education: America is home to many of the world’s top universities and colleges, which often provide not just academic growth but opportunities to deepen faith through Christian fellowships, ministries, and faith-based universities.

  • Safety and Freedom: In countries plagued by war, crime, or oppressive governments, the U.S. can represent a safe haven where rights—like freedom of religion, speech, and political expression—are protected by law, rights that many see as God-given and sacred.

  • Family Reunification: Scripture speaks often about the importance of family, and many immigrants come to join loved ones already living in the U.S., believing that God calls families to be united.

  • Innovation and Entrepreneurship: America has a long history of encouraging entrepreneurship. Many immigrants come with dreams of starting businesses, believing that God has blessed them with talents and abilities meant to be used for good.

    Pros of Living in America

  • Freedom of Worship: Perhaps one of the greatest blessings is the ability to attend church, read the Bible, pray publicly, and live out one’s faith without fear. Religious freedom is woven into the very fabric of American life.

  • Economic Mobility: Through hard work and perseverance, many immigrants have been able to improve their lives, often giving glory to God for providing opportunities and strength.

  • Educational Opportunities: From world-renowned universities to a wide range of vocational programs, education in America can be a powerful tool for those seeking to grow intellectually and spiritually.

  • Cultural Diversity: America’s rich cultural landscape means immigrants often find vibrant faith communities that welcome and support them.

  • Technological Advancement: Access to modern technology and healthcare can improve quality of life, which many view as a blessing from God’s provision.

Cons of Living in America

  • Cost of Living: Major cities have extremely high costs, which can strain families financially. Yet many rely on their faith, trusting that God will provide for their needs.

  • Healthcare System: Healthcare can be prohibitively expensive for many immigrants, and without strong insurance, it can feel overwhelming. Trust in God’s healing and provision often becomes a daily reliance.

  • Social Inequality: Income inequality and discrimination are real challenges. But many find hope in God's promises of justice and equality, holding onto His Word even in the face of hardship.

  • Cultural Adjustment: Moving to a new country often brings culture shock and loneliness. Many find comfort in faith communities where they can worship and build new friendships grounded in Christ.

  • Immigration Challenges: The legal process can be complex and difficult, yet many immigrants lean on prayer and faith, believing that God will guide their steps.

People hold protest signs reading "IMMIGRANTS make America GREAT" and "NO HATE NO FEAR" amid festive red and white lights and trees.

America continues to be a land where people come seeking a better life—not just economically, but spiritually. For millions, the chance to worship God freely, to raise their children in faith, and to live without fear is worth every sacrifice made along the journey. While life in America comes with its own set of challenges, many immigrants testify that God's hand has been with them every step of the way, opening doors that no man could shut.

As Scripture reminds us, "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future" (Jeremiah 29:11).
